Some currency services are merely one-person outfits plugged in to a currency company’s “white label” service and, as such, are not regulated. Worse, they don’t actually provide the currency exchange or payment services themselves. At A Place in the Sun Currency, we provide all services in-house, from quotes to exchange rates to payments. So you are dealing directly with the right people.

In recent years, online-only services have also emerged in the sector. These may be regulated in different countries, and often don’t provide any telephone support, so if there are any problems then they can be hard to sort out. Online services also don’t offer the same specialist knowledge about the property purchase process as we do at A Place in the Sun Currency, and they won’t be able to check your payments in the same way that we can.

Regulation in the UK & Europe

Since Brexit, it has been more difficult for UK firms to operate in the EU. Our Spanish subsidiary is in place to offer services to EU residents.

A Place in the Sun Currency Ltd is regulated in the UK by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) as an Authorised Payment Institution (API) with Firm Reference Number 504353.

A Place in the Sun Currency Europe SL is regulated in the EU by the Bank of Spain, with reference 6932.

Both businesses are registered with the relevant anti-money laundering bodies, being HMRC in the UK and SEPBLAC in Spain.

Top level banking & security

A Place in the Sun Currency has banking relationships with top grade banks, in the UK and Europe, and access to full corporate banking services. Along with our adherence to the safeguarding regulations, and use of client-dedicated bank accounts, that means your money is in the safest of hands.

Some currency services use banks in unusual jurisdictions, which you might not be comfortable with. The Financial Services Compensation Scheme does not apply to businesses holding client funds, so be sure you are happy with who is handling your funds.
